Immanuel Lutheran Church is now hiring for a Youth and Family Ministry Director. Pastoral: Minister to youth and their families during Sunday School and other church programs, being present in their lives outside the church walls, available for common concerns and in crisis situations. Leadership: Recruit and nurture Youth and Family Ministry program. Administration : Manage the planning process and coordinate with Pastor and Youth Committee all regular ministries to youth and their families. This includes youth of all ages on Sunday mornings and mid-week events; assisting with Confirmation, special events, trips and retreats, and parent meetings. Stewardship: Ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of youth programs, manage youth ministry budget, and collaborate with the sponsors of each Youth group. Ability to build, lead, and empower youth. Ability to implement a ministry vision. Familiarity with Lutheran Doctrine required; must be comfortable teaching it and representing Lutheran Theology. Proficient computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database, email, internet, and social media. Supervisory experience preferred. Ability to adapt and evaluate curriculum preferred. Must have excellent organization, communication (verbal and written), and listening skills, with a high degree of initiative and accountability. Exceptional interpersonal and relational skills required, with sensitivity to church members and visitors. Understanding and enjoyment of youth and families and guiding their spiritual development. Loyd Baker Hester, a longtime resident of Poth, Texas, passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at 9:35 p.m. in the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple at the age of 77 years, 3 months, and 13 days.

Loyd was born Aug. 1, 1934, in Miles, the son of Lonnie B. and Bonnie L. Stewart Hester. He graduated from Winters High School, class of 1952, and Hardin-Simmons University, class of 1961, where he majored in religion. He was a retired accountant. Loyd also served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 10 years; and in the U.S. Army for seven years, where he achieved the rank of staff sergeant and earned the good conduct medal. He retired from the Army in 1970 due to disability from injuries received during training maneuvers. Loyd lived most of his life in Texas except for when he was stationed in Germany from 1964-67, and when he lived in Arizona from 1972-83. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and served as sergeant at arms for the Alamo Chapter 5 of San Antonio for more than 15 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Loyd is survived by his beloved daughter, Heidi Neff of Austin; his brother, Gary Hester of Austin; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his many friends and family.

Visitation was held Saturday, Nov. 19, from 2-5 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with DAV Chaplain Albert Owens officiating.

Interment, with full military honors, followed at 1:45 p.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Serving as pallbearers were members of Loyd’s DAV unit.
