Loyd Baker Hester, a longtime resident of Poth, Texas, passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at 9:35 p.m. in the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple at the age of 77 years, 3 months, and 13 days.

Loyd was born Aug. 1, 1934, in Miles, the son of Lonnie B. and Bonnie L. Stewart Hester. He graduated from Winters High School, class of 1952, and Hardin-Simmons University, class of 1961, where he majored in religion. He was a retired accountant. Loyd also served in the U.S. Army National Guard for 10 years; and in the U.S. Army for seven years, where he achieved the rank of staff sergeant and earned the good conduct medal. He retired from the Army in 1970 due to disability from injuries received during training maneuvers. Loyd lived most of his life in Texas except for when he was stationed in Germany from 1964-67, and when he lived in Arizona from 1972-83. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and served as sergeant at arms for the Alamo Chapter 5 of San Antonio for more than 15 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Loyd is survived by his beloved daughter, Heidi Neff of Austin; his brother, Gary Hester of Austin; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his many friends and family.

Visitation was held Saturday, Nov. 19, from 2-5 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with DAV Chaplain Albert Owens officiating.

Interment, with full military honors, followed at 1:45 p.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
