Beavers dominate Milano, continue quest for title
Beaver running back Tyler Wiatrek (16) races to a touchdown against Milano, as quarterback Cameron Soto (3) looks on.
Falls City 47
DRIPPING SPRINGS -- After enjoying a pair of bye weeks, the Falls City Beaver football team returned to the field last Friday night against Milano. The Beavers showed no signs of weakness against the Eagles, and rolled on to a 47-13 win.
The first of seven touchdowns for Falls City came through the air, as junior quarterback Cameron Soto connected with Wade Jimerson for 13 yards and the score. Scott Lyssy kicked the extra point, and the Beavers held an early 7-0 lead.
The Beaver defense stopped the Eagle offense on its next possession, and Falls City walked back down the field for its second touchdown of the night. This one was courtesy of senior Tyler Wiatrek, as he raced 20 yards for the score. Throw in another Scott Lyssy extra point, and the Beavers led 14-0.
Early in the second quarter, Falls City made it a three-possession game, as the Beavers scored on a 1-yard run from Wiatrek. It was starting to look a little too easy, but then the Eagles caught a break as they scored on a 29-yard passing play. The extra point was good, and the score stood at 21-7 with 8:49 to play in the half.
While the Beavers were unable to answer the score with another of their own in the second quarter, Falls City did come back strong in the third by adding another two scores. Phillip Lyssy did the honors both times, running in from a yard out on each one. The Beavers failed to convert on the first extra-point attempt, but got it back with a Soto to Stephen Poole pass to make the scoreboard read 35-7.
Milano got a few points back as the Eagles returned the ensuing kickoff 66 yards for a touchdown, but the Beavers made them pay for it with another two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Wiatrek scored the first at the 8:36 mark on a 1-yard run from scrimmage, while Soto ran in the second with 4:31 to play in the game. Neither extra point was good, but it was of little consequence, as Falls City picked up the win, 47-13.
The Beaver defense played well throughout the night, virtually eliminating any trace of a Milano running game. The Eagles were held to just 29 rushing yards on 23 carries, and had to try and get things done through the air. Milano threw the ball 15 times against Falls City, though the Beavers allowed just seven completions for 133 yards. The Beaver defense picked off the Eagle quarterback three times.
On the offensive side of things, Soto completed five of eight passing attempts for 143 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 20 times for 90 yards and a score. Wiatrek also had 20 touches for Falls City, using his opportunities to tally 120 yards and three touchdowns. Phillip Lyssy ran the ball 11 times for 65 yards and two touchdowns, and Dean Gaskamp earned 45 yards on two carries. Jon Swierc ran the ball one time for 7 yards.
With the win, Falls City improves to 9-2 on the year, and advances to the regional quarterfinals. The Beavers will face the 10-1 Granger Lions this Friday, Nov. 25, at Corpus Christi Calallen High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
