The La Vernia Bears celebrate their 36-21 win over the Lampasas Badgers Nov. 18 in the area championship.
La Vernia 36
ROUND ROCK -- Following a 36-21 win over the Lampasas Badgers, the La Vernia Bears have won the area championship, and will now advance to the regional quarterfinals.
The Bears got things going in the first quarter, as they scored their first points of the game through the air. Quarterback Vince Gill hit Levi Andrews for 32 yards and the score, giving La Vernia a 6-0 lead. Senior Aaron Grubb then ran the ball over the goal line for a 2-point conversion, and it was an 8-0 advantage for the Bears.
Lampasas had a season record of 10-1 going into last Friday night’s matchup, and the Badgers looked it, as they stormed right back on their next possession to tie it up. With a 14-yard touchdown run and a good 2-point conversion, the score stood at 8-8 as the teams moved into the second quarter of play.
Early in the second, the Badgers took their first and only lead of the game, as Justin Maldonado found running room from midfield. The touchdown was officially 47 yards, and the point-after kick made it a 15-8 affair.
The Bears came back to score against Lampasas, as Grubb ran in from the 7-yard line. The speedy senior went on to score again in the final minutes of the half, breaking through the Badger defense from the Bear 15-yard line for a thrilling 85-yard touchdown. Alec Dews kicked both extra points, and La Vernia took a 22-15 lead into halftime.
Lampasas scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on an 11-yard run from scrimmage, but a failed 2-point conversion attempt left the score at 22-21 in favor of the Bears.
The Bear defense held the Badgers from there, as the offensive unit went on to add a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. The first came on an 11-yard run from Grubb, and the second was on a 1-yard quarterback keeper from Gill. Dews kicked both extra points, and the final score stood at 36-21.
While the loss bumps the 10-2 Badgers from the playoffs, the win lifts La Vernia to 7-5 on the year, and moves the Bears into the third round of playoff competition.
Gill completed four of six passing attempts on the night for 104 yards and a touchdown. He split the goods evenly over three receivers, as Jose Sahagun pulled in a pass for 38 yards, Josh Rutledge caught two passes for 34 yards, and Levi Andrews hauled in a toss for another 32.
On the ground, Grubb led the Bear offense with 253 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries. Gill ran seven times for 61 yards, Andrews had a carry for 17 yards, and Landon Richter ran three times for another 6.
The Bear defense continued to show its dominance, and did a great job with the Lampasas offense, as it held the Badgers to 377 total yards. La Vernia shut down any hope of a passing game for Lampasas, as Badger quarterback Brandon Scott went 0 for 4 and threw an interception.
The Bears will spend Thanksgiving week preparing for the unbeaten West Columbia Roughnecks. The regional quarterfinal game will be played this Friday, Nov. 25, at 6 p.m. The Bears and their fans will have to do a little traveling, as the contest will be played in the Berry Center in Cypress.
