SAN ANTONIO -- After beginning last week with a healthy 93-31 win over Seguin, the Floresville Jaguars traveled to San Antonio to compete in the Southwest Tournament. The Jags made a strong showing in their first tournament of the year, and returned home with a solid third-place finish.

The first game of the tournament for Floresville put the team on the floor with Clark. The Lady Cougars led by a point after the first period of play, but the Jags outpaced Clark in the second period, and took a 1-point lead into halftime. The game remained close throughout, but the Jags earned a 70-61 win, and advanced in bracket play.

Burbank was next on the list for Floresville, and the Hoop Troop made quick work of the team. The Jags outscored the Lady Bulldogs 34-2 in the first period, and 24-5 in the second, taking a 58-7 lead into halftime. Floresville backed off in the second half, but still outscored Burbank 28-9, and advanced with an 86-16 victory.

During their third game, the Jaguars were took on the Lady Rockets of Judson, and were handed their first loss of the season. Judson jumped out to a 14-10 lead after one, and was on top of Floresville 31-21 at the break. The Jags came back to match the Lady Rockets at 16 points each in the third, but couldn’t make up the difference in the fourth. Judson outscored Floresville 14-11 in the final stanza, and advanced to the championship game with a 61-48 win.

The loss moved the Jags into the third-place game with Marshall, and Floresville got the job done, winning 66-54.

The Hoop Troop jumped out to a 17-10 advantage after one period, and led 39-31 at the break. Marshall came back strong in the third to close the gap at 50-44, but Floresville turned up the heat in the fourth, outscoring Marshall 16-10, and claiming third-place honors with a 66-54 win.

Erica “Goose” Hernandez, who was later named to the all-tournament team, led the Jags over Marshall with 20 points, followed by Shelby Leinneweber with 14 points and Destiny Amaro with 11. Brittany Aikens dropped in 9 points for Floresville, and Amanda Montoya and DeHavalan Watts each tossed in another 6.

Floresville was scheduled to travel to La Vernia Nov. 21 to take on the Lady Bears, and then to host the Lady Bobcats of South San Nov. 22. From there, the Jags will enjoy a short break from competition before returning to the hardwood Tuesday, Nov. 29, with a trip to Alamo Heights.
