Schulenburg 28

Poth 33

VICTORIA -- Schulenburg may have scored first during its game with the Poth Pirates last Friday night, but when the dust finally settled at Victoria Memorial Stadium, it was Poth celebrating the victory, and a trip to the regional quarterfinals.

The first quarter got off to a bit of a slow start, but Schulenburg broke the stalemate with just 1:29 to play in the first, as Kyle Bludau ran the ball in from 4 yards out. The Shorthorns added the extra point, and took a 7-0 lead.

It turns out that Poth doesn’t like losing, and the Pirate offense stormed back on its next possession, eventually scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run from Phillip Garza. The extra-point attempt failed, and the Pirates continued to trail the Shorthorns.

After a couple of changes in possession, the Poth offense gave the Pirates their first lead of the game, as Garza ran in for his second touchdown of the night. Following the 2-yard touchdown run, quarterback Braden Lyssy connected with Garza on the 2-point conversion, and Poth led 14-7 with under four minutes to play in the half.

Schulenburg used the clock well, and was able to score once more before halftime. With a 1-yard touchdown run and another extra point, the teams headed for the locker rooms tied at 14-14.

Poth scored the only touchdown of the third quarter, as Lyssy connected with Tyler Kallies for 26 yards and a touchdown with 6:08 to play on the clock. Lyssy then kicked the extra point, and the Pirates were back on top, 21-14.

In the fourth, Garza picked up his third rushing touchdown of the game as he pounded his way in from the 2-yard line. The point-after attempt was no good, but the lead was 27-14, and time was winding down.

The Pirates were feeling confident, but Schulenburg still had a little gas in the tank. Tanner Florus fielded the ensuing kickoff at the Shorthorn 9-yard line, and then proceeded to return it 91 yards for a touchdown. Bludau added the point-after kick, and the score stood at 27-21 with 9:24 to play in the game.

On their next possession, the Pirates did what they do best, and marched the ball down the field. Poth used nearly four minutes of the clock, and scored its fifth touchdown of the game as Lyssy kept the ball and scrambled 13 yards for the score. A 2-point conversion attempt fell short, but the lead was 12, as the scoreboard read 33-21.

Schulenburg quickly got back down the field and scored again to make it a 33-28 game, but the Pirates held the Shorthorns from there, and advanced in the playoffs with the 5-point victory.

Lyssy led the Pirate offense on the night with 122 yards of passing offense and 134 yards on the ground. The senior threw one touchdown and ran in another. Garza also had a solid game for Poth, rushing for 108 yards and three touchdowns on 24 touches. Antonio Cantu was the Pirates’ leading receiver of the game with 63 yards, and Kallies was close behind with 59 yards and a touchdown.

The Poth defense held Schulenburg to just 186 yards of total offense, allowing only 95 yards of rushing offense, and 91 yards through the air. The Pirate defense also forced three punts.

With the win, Poth improves to 11-0 on the year, and will advance into the regional quarterfinals. The Pirates will travel back to Victoria this Friday, Nov. 25, to take on the also-undefeated Refugio Bobcats. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Victoria Memorial Stadium.
