SAN ANTONIO -- J.J. Lindsey, a home-schooled student from Adkins, signed his letter of intent Nov. 9 to attend school and play golf for the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).
One of the biggest adjustments J.J. may have when he moves into his dorm at UTSA next fall could be that he must drive to a golf course in order to practice hitting. As a rural home-schooled athlete, he has been accustomed to using his front “yard,” or acreage, as a driving range when not at a golf course. J.J. has been hitting golf balls into the field since before he began taking lessons from Jim Barker at the Quarry Golf Course. J.J. was 12 years old when he started the lessons.
After years of consistent practice in that pasture and on actual golf courses, untold blessings, as well as having heeded advice to enter very competitive tournaments, J.J. found himself playing this summer in the top tournament in junior golf -- the U.S. Junior Amateur. He looks forward to bringing experience gained from that tournament, as well as many others, to the UTSA men’s golf program in the fall of 2012.
J.J.’s trip to the U.S. Junior Am began at the local qualifier at Briggs Ranch Golf Club. J.J.’s 146, +2 (74, 72), earned him the first-place medal and a spot in the national tournament. While at the U.S. Junior Amateur at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., J.J. ended with a 153, +9 (76, 77), after two days of stroke play. He missed the cut by one stroke to go into the top 64 match play portion of the tournament. As the 2011 Greater San Antonio (GSA) Junior Match Play Champion, this was a huge disappointment for him.
During the 2011 GSA Junior Match Play Championship, J.J. began very well in the stroke play round with a -6 (66) at Riverside Golf Course, and captured the No. 1 seed. After a bye, he worked his way through five matches to capture the title. This was a long-awaited victory, because during the 2010 tournament, he was knocked out in the semifinals by UTSA signee and 2009 Match Play Champion Eddie DeVane. Combined with the Junior Match Play title and a fifth-place showing during the 2011 GSA Junior Championship at Brackenridge Golf Course, where J.J. ended up with a 216, +3 (76, 70, 70), he is ranked the No. 1 junior at Golf San Antonio.
J.J. has competed in Golf Week- and American Junior Golf Association-ranked tournaments, as well as Polo-ranked tournaments over the past two years. His résumé includes five top-10 finishes. One of J.J.’s favorite tournaments is The Texas Junior Golf Tour Holiday Classic at Barton Creek Golf Club. His three-day total of 221, +8 (71, 78, 72) left him with a seventh-place finish in a field of 94 players from Texas, as well as other states and countries.
Almost as a transition into college golf, J.J. experienced collegiate competition during the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Riverhill Golf Club in August. His score of 147, +3 (75, 72), tied him for 10th place in a field of approximately 60 players, most of whom are current or prior college golfers.
As an NCAA National Letter of Intent signee, J.J. is focusing on improving his game, as well as completing a rigorous practice and academic schedule. He looks forward to competing for entrance into men’s golf tournaments, while playing in the juniors, as he begins his transition to college golf at UTSA in the fall.
