Poth builds outdoor classroom
Poth High School sophomores Nick Sifuentez and Thomas Rodriguez get to work.
An outdoor classroom is being built this school year by the Environmental Systems, Building Trades, and Ag classes of Poth High School. It will consist of a covered learning area with picnic tables, raised vegetable gardens, two small ponds, two butterfly gardens, a native prairie garden, rainwater catchment system, birdhouses and feeders, and workable levers and pulleys.
Poth High School received a grant from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service to come up with an outdoor classroom. Last year’s Environmental Systems class contributed by sketching out where everything is going to be placed for the native prairie garden. This year’s class has already begun to work by digging holes for two ponds and packing in the liners.
Instructor Margie Hoover took her Environmental Systems class on a field trip to Water Garden Gems to look at ponds, goldfish, and water plants. Mrs. Hoover stated that they have learned aspects of pond making that will be useful to them in the future. Some have also learned that digging a hole is not as fun as they thought.
The Building Trades classes have already started as well by building trusses for the roof of the covered area. The skills these students learn are important to any builder according to their instructors, Jim Whites and Ronnie Wieding. The critical thinking skills used by the students are important throughout life.
Mrs. Hoover also stated that this will be a place for interactive learning about natural areas and for daily exposure to nature. The youth that create and maintain this outdoor classroom will gain an immeasurable sense of pride and ownership of the natural area. It is an excellent way to ensure wildlife appreciation and awareness by our youth and prepare them to become future stewards of our environment.
Any donations or help would be greatly appreciated. Items that will be needed for the outdoor classroom are gardening equipment and supplies, landscaping materials, and seedlings of native plants.
Alison Reed is a senior at Poth High School. The junior journalist participates in track and is a cheerleader. The daughter of Derrick and Cheryl Reed, she hopes to attend college and become a cosmetologist after high school.
