Girls basketball teams off to good start
The area girls basketball teams were pacing themselves a bit before the Thanksgiving holiday, but with district matchups in the not-so-distant future, the teams are moving into full swing.
Down in Falls City, the Beaverettes have had a good start to their 2011-12 season. The team began its year with a narrow 73-64 loss to Poth, but than came back with a trio of solid wins over Karnes City (69-43), Pleasanton (87-15), and George West (85-27).
Camari Crawford leads the team in scoring, averaging nearly 19 points per game. Tiffany Dziuk is tossing in 13 points per game on average, and Ashleigh Blocker is getting good time and numbers for Falls City, as well.
The Beaverettes were scheduled to be in action against Jourdanton Nov. 29, and will compete in the Navarro Tournament later this week.
Just up the road in Poth, the Pirettes are getting a late start as a complete unit. Many of the players were busy winning the Class 2A state volleyball title, and are just now making the transition to the basketball floor. Still, the Pirettes have been on their game, and were 2-0 as of press time.
Over the two games played, Micah Weaver leads the team in scoring average with 17 points, though Ashley Fuller is averaging 15 points per game, and leads the team with 30 total points. Jennifer Kruse, Annika Eckel, and Claire Raabe have also contributed to the Pirettes’ points production early this season.
The Pirettes were scheduled to host La Vernia Nov. 29, and will be in Floresville next Tuesday, Dec. 6.
In Stockdale, the Lady Brahmas have already seen their ups and downs, and the team is looking to build momentum before district play begins. The team started the year with a win over Charlotte, before falling to Giddings, Wimberley, and Navarro. Stockdale rebounded nicely, though, earning respectable wins over Laredo United and Laredo United South to close out the Gonzales Tournament.
Kat Wehmeyer is leading the team in scoring, and has posted an average of more than 19 points per game. Sarah Holguin has been solid with 50 points on the year, and Haley Wallace and Lashay Castro are both averaging more than 5 points per game.
The Lady Brahmas were scheduled to have a rematch with Navarro Nov. 29, and will be in Karnes City Dec. 1-3 for tournament play.
Across the county line in Nixon, the Lady Mustangs of Nixon-Smiley have also been taking care of business. The team got rolling with wins over Natalia, Pearsall, Cuero, and Yorktown, and held a 4-0 record as of press time.
The Lady Mustangs have been sharing the responsibility in Nixon, and have several players contributing in each game. Jazmin Erskine is the team’s scoring leader at this point, averaging 9 points per game. Savannah Martinez is putting in nearly 8 points per game, and Abby Scarbrough is close behind with an average of 7 points per game.
Nixon-Smiley was scheduled to host Pleasanton Nov. 29, and will be in Karnes City Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 1-3, for the Lady Badgers’ tournament.
The La Vernia Lady Bears have gotten off to a slow start this season, but the team showed signs of promise during its play at the Cole Tournament. Madison Towns currently leads the team with a scoring average of nearly 8 points per game, followed by Kristine Key and Kayla Markgraf at 7 points and 6 points per game, respectively.
The Lady Bears were scheduled to play in Poth Nov. 29, and will travel over to Marion later this week for tournament play.
Big things are expected of a senior-rich squad in Floresville, and the Jags haven’t disappointed thus far. The team had an overall record of 8-1 as of press time, and turned in commanding wins over South San (96-28), La Vernia (93-26), Burbank (86-16), and Seguin (93-31).
Southeastern Louisiana signee Erica “Goose” Hernandez has already dropped in 185 points this season, putting her average above 20 points per game. Fellow senior Brittany Aikens is averaging more than 15 points per game, and junior Shelby Leinneweber has been busy dropping in 10 points per outing.
The Jags planned to hit the road Nov. 29, for a game in Alamo Heights, and will then be back on their home court for the annual Jaguar Classic tournament.
At East Central High School, the Lady Hornets have had a taste of success. The team has dropped a few tough games en route to a handful of thrilling wins.
East Central began the year with a 2-point win over Roosevelt, and then dropped its game with Floresville by 11. The Lady Hornets beat up on Smithson Valley, and then made a good showing in the SAISD Tournament. The team also won big over the Thanksgiving weekend, as it competed in the NEISD tourney.
East Central was scheduled to host Taft Nov. 29, and will be in Floresville Dec. 1-3 for the Jaguar Classic.
Azaria Nave is leading the team with 192 season points, and an average of more than 19 points per game. Shaun Cherry is averaging nearly 17 points per game, and Kayla White has tossed in an average of 12 points per game. Brittany Darden-Gonzales and Kayla Lund have also posted big numbers for East Central early this season.
