During the Thanksgiving break, the La Vernia Lady Bear junior varsity basketball squad was gearing up to face two very difficult, very talented teams in Floresville and Medina Valley.

Starting the week, La Vernia hosted the Jaguars from Floresville. The Lady Bears had a rough start from the first whistle, as the aggression of the Jags proved overwhelming for the Lady Bears. With many missed opportunities from the free-throw line, the Lady Bears went into the locker room down at the half, 35-15.

This was new territory for the Lady Bears, as they had never been trailing at halftime, nor had they faced a loss, as they were 5-0 on the season. The second half proved much of the same, and at the end of the game, the Lady Bears were defeated 57-39.

The leading scorer for La Vernia was Cala Foster with 12 points, followed by Jennifer Skrzycki with 8, and Brooke Martinez with 6. Reagan Roswell contributed 5, Courtney Shussler added 4, and Shelby Ellis and Hallie Pace each scored 2 points.

On Nov. 22, the Lady Bears traveled to Medina Valley to face the Lady Panthers. Foul trouble plagued the Lady Bears early on, as the Panthers shot 10 free throws in the first quarter alone. Unable to break their press, the Lady Bears fell behind quickly, trailing 25-16.

A rough third quarter, in which the Lady Bears only scored 1 point, gave the Panthers a 36-17 lead heading into the final quarter of play. The Lady Bears fought hard and made a comeback in the fourth, outscoring the Panthers 10-5. Their efforts fell short, though, as the game ended by handing the Lady Bears their second loss of the season at 41-27.

Roswell was the leading scorer for La Vernia with 8 points, followed by Foster, Brittany Thompson, and Pace with 4 points each. Jordan Bailey, Skrzycki, and Kim Jacobs added 2 points, and Shussler scored 1.

“This was a tough week for us as we faced two good teams,” said Coach Mandie West. “It would have been very easy for the girls to hang their heads and give up, but we fought hard the entire time during both games. These two losses should not overshadow the great season we have had so far. We are 5-2 with a tournament win, which we are all very proud of.”
