Refugio 41

Poth 7

VICTORIA -- After a win over Schulenburg the week prior, the Poth Pirate football team returned to Victoria’s Memorial Stadium last Friday to square off with the unbeaten Refugio Bobcats. The Pirates were looking for a trip to the regional finals, but the Bobcats had other plans, and handed Poth a 41-7 loss to end its season.

The Bobcats showed their ability to move the ball early, and scored the first 6 points of the night on a 13-yard touchdown run from Draigon Silvas. The point-after attempt was no good, but the Pirates found themselves in an early hole, trailing 6-0 with 9:45 to play in the first.

Poth fired right back at Refugio, though, and the Pirates answered the Bobcat touchdown with one of their own. Junior running back Phillip Garza did the honors for Poth, as he rumbled 15 yards to tie the score at 6-0. Senior quarterback Braden Lyssy stayed out to kick the extra point, and Poth led 7-6 with 5:16 to play in the first.

The first-quarter scoring wasn’t quite finished, though, and with 1:30 to play in the stanza, Refugio scored its second touchdown of the night on a Shiloh Whetsel run of 3 yards. Whetsel also ran in the 2-point conversion, and the Bobcats found themselves back on top, 14-7.

Early in the second quarter, Refugio made it a two-possession game, as Jack Gumm reeled in a 3-yard touchdown toss from Bobcat quarterback Travis Quintanilla. The extra-point kick was good, and Poth trailed 21-7 with 10:15 left in the half. The battle of unbeaten teams raged on from there, though neither team could find the end zone again. As the buzzer sounded the end of the first half, Refugio took its lead into the locker room.

The Bobcats looked to put the game away in the third, as Silvas ran for his second touchdown of the game. Add on the extra point, and the score was 28-7 in favor of Refugio. Fast forward to the early minutes of the fourth quarter, and Justin Padilla scored the Bobcats’ fifth touchdown of the game with a 5-yard interception return.

Leading the game 35-7, Refugio tacked on a little bonus for themselves in the closing minutes of the game with a 5-yard touchdown strike from Quintanilla to Whetsel. The extra-point attempt was no good, but the Bobcats secured the win by the score of 41-7.

The Pirate defense did the best it could with Refugio, but the Bobcats proved to be a bit too strong. Quintanilla threw for more than 200 yards on the night, and Whetsel and Silvas each ran for more than 100 yards.

For Poth, Braden Lyssy completed 7 of his 15 passing attempts for 73 yards. Garrett Yanta was the Pirates’ leading receiver with a catch for 24 yards, followed by Zach Lyssy with 21 yards on two grabs. Trey Broyles, Tyler Kallies, and Blake Lyssy each had one catch for 8 yards, and Garza caught a pass for 4 more.

Garza led the Poth ground attack with 94 yards on 16 carries, and Blake Lyssy ran the ball 17 times for 47 yards.

The loss was the first of the year for the Pirates, and the team ends its season with an overall mark of 11-1. Poth was the District 14-2A-DII champion, and also earned an area championship this season.
