ON-CALL CRISIS POOL WORKERS NEEDED. Part-time positions are available for after hours “on-call” crisis workers to respond to mental health crisis for Wilson and Karnes Counties. Duties include crisis interventions, assessments, referrals to stabilization services, and referrals for involuntary treatment services according to the Texas Mental Health Laws. You must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, sociology, social work, nursing, etc. On-call hours are from 5 p.m.-8 a.m. weekdays, weekends and holidays vary. If selected, you must attend required training and must be able to report to designated safe sites within 1 hour of request for assessment. Edward J. ‘Johnny’ Mergele

Edward J. “Johnny” Mergele died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, in La Vernia, Texas, at the age of 81 from complications of a stroke suffered just over a year ago. Johnny was born March 11, 1930, to Edward R. and Irene (Campbell) Mergele in San Antonio.

He worked at the Lone Star Brewery for 44 years before retiring. Johnny owned and operated the original Johnny’s Barbeque in Seguin. He was also proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Ann Parish in La Vernia.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Johnny is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-law, Dennis and wife Janet and Ken. He was a beloved grandfather to Andrew, Alison, Jordan, Kelly, Ryan, Bryan, and Michelle; and great-grandpa to Samuel, Olivia, and Kylie. Johnny is also survived by his longtime companion, Lorene Strzelczyk; his sister, Aline Griffin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Nov. 30, from 4-9 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia. A rosary was recited at 6:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m. in the St. Ann Catholic Church in La Vernia with Father Stanley Fiuk officiating.

Interment followed in the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Cemetery in St. Hedwig.

Memorial donations may be made by way of Mass cards.
