Edward J. “Johnny” Mergele died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, in La Vernia, Texas, at the age of 81 from complications of a stroke suffered just over a year ago. Johnny was born March 11, 1930, to Edward R. and Irene (Campbell) Mergele in San Antonio.

He worked at the Lone Star Brewery for 44 years before retiring. Johnny owned and operated the original Johnny’s Barbeque in Seguin. He was also proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Ann Parish in La Vernia.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Johnny is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-law, Dennis and wife Janet and Ken. He was a beloved grandfather to Andrew, Alison, Jordan, Kelly, Ryan, Bryan, and Michelle; and great-grandpa to Samuel, Olivia, and Kylie. Johnny is also survived by his longtime companion, Lorene Strzelczyk; his sister, Aline Griffin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Wednesday, Nov. 30, from 4-9 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia. A rosary was recited at 6:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m. in the St. Ann Catholic Church in La Vernia with Father Stanley Fiuk officiating.
