FLORESVILLE -- Despite losing several seniors unexpectedly this year, the Floresville Tiger basketball team is playing well, and Head Coach Kevin Wiatrek remains optimistic about the team’s season.

The Tigers opened their 2011-12 season with a good 21-point win over former district rival Southside. The team then lost to McCollum, but came back to earn a 3-point win over Kerrville Tivy.

The Tigers had their first big loss of the year to New Braunfels Canyon on Nov. 22, but responded well one week later by doubling up on La Vernia, 66-32. The team was off to a decent start at 3-2, but knew it would be tested as it competed in the South San Tournament Dec. 1-3.

Floresville started out with a 7-point loss to Boerne, 44-37, and then fell to Kennedy by the score of 45-43. The Tigers were out of the running in the tournament, but still had one game left. Wiatrek rallied his troops against Clemens High School in Saturday’s matchup, and returned home with a solid 54-39 win.

While the team stands at 4-4 on the year, there is still plenty of time for the Tigers to build momentum. With only one starter who has previous varsity experience, it’s not going to be an easy road for Floresville, but Wiatrek’s confidence comes from the positive attitude and willingness he sees in his players.

“This team of kids works really hard,” Wiatrek said. “They just really want to win. I think we are going to be all right this year. We have a chance to be pretty good.”

Floresville was scheduled to play Burbank at the Alamo Convocation Center Dec. 6, and will travel to Hondo Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9-10 for the Owls’ tournament. District play won’t begin until Friday, Jan. 13, and the Tigers will use every day between now and then in an effort to get better, and to achieve the success Wiatrek knows is possible.
