KARNES CITY -- The Nixon-Smiley Mustang basketball team has been on fire since the season began, and the team didn’t let up any en route to its tournament championship this past weekend in Karnes City.

The Badgers and Lady Badgers, together with the Karnes City Athletic Booster Club, held both boys and girls basketball tournaments Dec. 1-3. Nixon-Smiley, Stockdale, and La Vernia were all invited over on the boys side, and for the girls tournament, Nixon-Smiley and Stockdale made the short drive to Badger Country.

The Mustangs had a great run through the tournament, knocking off Sinton, Taft, and Karnes City before taking the championship game from La Vernia. The Bears also made a good run in Karnes City, beating Skidmore-Tynan, Kenedy, and Stockdale before falling to the Mustangs for the championship.

Stockdale began its tournament run with wins over Kenedy and Skidmore-Tynan, but came up short against the Bears. That put the Brahmas into the third-place game against Taft, where the team emerged with a win.

“It was nice to see our local teams sweep the competition like that,” said one fan who made the trip to Karnes City. “We have some good teams down here this year. It’s going to be an exciting season.”

On the girls side of things, the Stockdale Lady Brahmas made their run at the championship with pool-play wins over Nixon-Smiley, Pleasanton, and Three Rivers. Stockdale squared off with Karnes City in the championship game, but the Lady Brahmas fell short, 53-42.

While the Lady Mustangs of Nixon-Smiley did lose their game with Stockdale, it was their only blemish of the tournament. The Lady Mustangs defeated Pleasanton and Three Rivers in pool play, and then knocked off the Cole Cougars in the third-place game, 46-38.

Both Stockdale and Nixon-Smiley will travel to Poteet later this week to participate in another round of tournament play.
