Two confirmed dead in Virginia Tech shooting
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- According to reports, two people, including one police officer, were fatally shot on the campus of Virginia Tech Thursday afternoon. The suspect has not been apprehended.
The university’s website described the event.
“Shortly after noon today, a Virginia Tech police officer stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the coliseium parking lot near McComas Hall. During the traffic stop, the officer was shot and killed. There were witnesses to this shooting.”
The reports indicate that the suspect fled on foot toward a parking lot where a second person was found dead. Several law-enforcement agencies have been called in to assist in the search, and the Virginia State Police is taking the lead in the investigation.
Additional reports of gunfire have been reported around the campus, but according to the university’s website, these reports are “unfounded.”
Still, school officials remain concerned, and are asking students and faculty to remain in place.
“Please stay where you are and secure your surroundings,” the website states.
The incident reminds many of the Virginia Tech shootings in April 2007 in which 32 people were killed and 25 others were wounded.
