With Christmas two weeks away and seasonal weather in the midst, CPS Energy <http://www.cpsenergy.com/> recommends a switch to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for last-minute decorators and those looking forward to after-Christmas sales. Using LED holiday lighting <http://www.cpsenergy.com/Residential/Energy_Efficiency/holiday_energy_efficiency.asp> can result in increased safety and savings because they use less energy than traditional lights.

ENERGY STAR®-rated LED lights are 90 percent more energy efficient, and last 10 times longer than conventional lights. Other LED benefits include:

· Holiday LED lights use only 0.04 watts per bulb, or one-tenth the energy used by miniature bulbs.

· Ten sets of 100 LED bulbs would only cost 60 cents a month to operate, compared to up to 26 dollars for traditional lights.

· LED holiday lights last longer, with an operational lifespan of about 20,000 hours or 40 holiday seasons.

· LEDs are cooler than incandescent bulbs, reducing the risk of fire and personal injury.

· LEDs are more durable and shock-resistant because they don’t contain filaments or glass.

Regardless of the type of lights chosen, the following safety tips are encouraged:

· Use only UL-approved lights appropriately rated for indoor or outdoor use.

· When hanging outdoor lights or installing rooftop decorations, keep the ladder away from power lines.

· Never touch lights with wet hands or while standing on water.

· Do not overload electrical circuits.

· In case of an electric or natural gas emergency, immediately call 911 and CPS Energy at 353-HELP (4357).

CPS Energy is the nation’s largest municipally owned natural gas and electric utility, providing service to approximately 717,000 electric customers and 325,000 natural gas customers in and around the City of San Antonio. The utility ranks among the nation’s lowest-cost energy providers while ranking number 1 in wind-energy capacity among municipally owned utilities.
