CPS recommends LED lights for holiday safety, savings

With Christmas two weeks away and seasonal weather in the midst, CPS Energy <http://www.cpsenergy.com/> recommends a switch to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for last-minute decorators and those looking forward to after-Christmas sales. Using LED holiday lighting <http://www.cpsenergy.com/Residential/Energy_Efficiency/holiday_energy_efficiency.asp> can result in increased safety and savings because they use less energy than traditional lights.

ENERGY STAR®-rated LED lights are 90 percent more energy efficient, and last 10 times longer than conventional lights. Other LED benefits include:

· Holiday LED lights use only 0.04 watts per bulb, or one-tenth the energy used by miniature bulbs.

· Ten sets of 100 LED bulbs would only cost 60 cents a month to operate, compared to up to 26 dollars for traditional lights.

· LED holiday lights last longer, with an operational lifespan of about 20,000 hours or 40 holiday seasons.

· LEDs are cooler than incandescent bulbs, reducing the risk of fire and personal injury.

· LEDs are more durable and shock-resistant because they don’t contain filaments or glass.

Regardless of the type of lights chosen, the following safety tips are encouraged:

· Use only UL-approved lights appropriately rated for indoor or outdoor use.

· When hanging outdoor lights or installing rooftop decorations, keep the ladder away from power lines.

· Never touch lights with wet hands or while standing on water.

· Do not overload electrical circuits.

· In case of an electric or natural gas emergency, immediately call 911 and CPS Energy at 353-HELP (4357).
