UIW plans transition to Division 1

SAN ANTONIO -- At a meeting held last week, the board of trustees at the University of the Incarnate Word voted for UIW to begin the process to transition to NCAA Division I status.

Currently a member of Division II and the Lone Star Conference, UIW has been involved in a series of actions to determine the feasibility of a move to Division I. The first step was a campus-wide student survey about support for such a move. Those results showed some 60 percent were in favor.

Because the student results were in the affirmative, the university’s planning commission, which is responsible for long-range planning at UIW, was subsequently asked if it favored the move. The results were affirmative, so a recommendation was made to forward the issue to the UIW Executive Council, a body comprised of the university’s senior administrators. The Executive Council also endorsed the move, and recommended it be forwarded to the board.

“This is a crucial part of our continuing process to build the UIW brand statewide and nationally,” said UIW President Lou Agnese. “It’s our goal for UIW to be a well-known, established brand by the end of the decade.”

The multi-year process would begin early next year with UIW soliciting an invitation to join a Division I conference. If successful, it would culminate in the 2017-18 season, when UIW would be eligible for all Division I post-season competition.
