LA VERNIA -- Last Tuesday, the La Vernia Lady Bear junior varsity basketball team hosted the Hondo Owls at home. It was a big game for the Lady Bears, who were coming off three straight losses, and the team rose to the occasion, winning the game 51-39.

The Lady Bears started off with a bang, jumping out to a 9-point lead after the first quarter. Their momentum carried them into the second quarter, where the team added another 11 points to give La Vernia a 10-point lead at the half, 24-14.

In the third quarter, the Lady Bears added another 9 points, giving them a lead of 11 points heading into the fourth and final quarter. The Lady Bears had an explosive fourth quarter, with key free throw shooting and multiple fast breaks. They added 18 points in the fourth, and locked up a much-needed win over the Owls.

The high scorer for the game was Shelby Ellis with 11 points, followed by Cala Foster with 10. Courtney Shussler added 9 points, Tori Broll and Jennifer Skrzycki each scored 6, and Reagan Roswell dropped in 5 points. Hallie Pace and Kim De la Torre each added 2 more.

The Lady Bears improved to 6-3 heading into the George Gervin tournament Dec. 8-10.

“This was a great win for us,” said Coach Mandie West. “We needed to come out and make a statement and we did. Coming off three tough losses isn’t easy, and we proved ourselves tonight against a very good Hondo team. This is just what we needed to head into the tournament this weekend and district next week.”
