Poth Pirates edge La Vernia Bears on the hardwood

POTH -- It wasn’t much of a barnburner when the Poth Pirates defeated the La Vernia Bears 34-31 last week, but for a pair of basketball teams whose athletes are still making the transition from football cleats to basketball shoes, the contest served as good practice for the impending district games.
The teams were fairly evenly matched, and Poth held a slight advantage after the first period of play. The Pirates outscored the Bears 10-7, but were looking for improvement in the second.
Unfortunately for Poth, La Vernia showed some improvements on defense, while dropping in an extra bucket of its own. The Bears turned the tide on the Pirates, outscoring the home team 9-6 in the period, and tying the game at 16-all for halftime.
Following the break, the teams came back out with renewed passion, but couldn’t get the ball to fall their way. Both teams stepped up their play on defense, and when the buzzer sounded the end of the third period, the score remained tied at 21-21.
Like so many previous games between the teams, it became clear this game would be decided in the final period of play. Both teams managed to hit their marks during the final stanza, though it was Poth who held a slight advantage, and locked up the win, 34-31.
Jacob Caloss led the Pirate offensive effort with 15 points on the night, followed by Oscar Ramon and Jerrek Hosek with 4 points each. Antonio Cantu and Dillon Zaiontz each scored 3 points.
For the Bears, senior Kenny Moehrig paced the team with 10 points, followed by Josh Campos with 5 points and Jose Sahagun with 4.
“Both our teams are still just getting started,” said Poth Pirate Head Coach Fred Radske. “I’ve still got guys recovering from football and coming out for practice now, and La Vernia is dealing with the same thing.”
The Pirates were scheduled to conclude their week by competing in the Pearsall Tournament, and La Vernia was marked to compete in the Hondo Owls’ tournament.
