FLORESVILLE -- After an untimely second-round loss left the Floresville Jaguar basketball team with a less-than-desirable finishing position in the Jaguar Classic tournament, the girls came back strong last week to hand Poth and Medina Valley big losses.
Against the Pirettes, the Jags played a solid game throughout the contest. Poth attempted to keep things close in the first period and trailed by just 6 at the end of the first, but Floresville outscored the Pirettes 17-8 in the second stanza, and took a 37-22 advantage into halftime.
The third period looked a lot like the first, though Poth was unable to make up any ground against the Jaguars. Floresville took a 21-point lead into the final period of play, and then outscored Poth for the fourth-straight period to win 71-43.
Erica “Goose” Hernandez paced the Jaguars with 24 points on the night, followed by Amanda Montoya with 14 and Shelby Leinneweber with another 11.
Poth junior Micah Weaver had a solid game for the Pirettes with 15 points, and senior Jordan Kotara dropped in another 10.
The Jags welcomed the state-ranked Medina Valley Lady Panthers to Floresville Dec. 9, but the pleasantries ended with the pre-game introductions and handshakes. The Jags played aggressively from the opening tipoff, and shocked the Lady Panthers by outscoring them 19-2 in the first period.
Medina Valley got back on track in the second to score 15, but the Jags were just hitting their stride as they ripped off 24 points, taking a big 43-17 lead into the locker room.
As if things didn’t look bad enough for the Lady Panthers at the half, Floresville obliterated Medina Valley in the third stanza, outscoring the Lady Panthers 29-13, and taking a 72-30 lead into the final eight minutes of play.
The game was over, but the clock continued to roll. The Jags concluded the game with a 15-point fourth-quarter effort, and sent Medina Valley home with an 87-35 loss.
Hernandez was once again the Jags’ leading scorer with 23 points on the night, and fellow senior Brittany Aikens was just a point behind at 22. Destiny Amaro scored 17 points for Floresville, and sophomore DeHavalan Watts was good for another 8.
The win elevates the Jaguars’ season record to 14-2. The team was scheduled to travel to San Antonio to face Holy Cross on Dec. 13, and will be back at home on Monday, Dec. 19, to take on Corpus Christi King.
