Poth Pirettes split games prior to Christmas break
POTH -- With a win over Karnes City and a loss to Wagner, the Poth Pirette varsity basketball team went into its Christmas break with an overall record of 9-6, and a District 30-2A mark of 3-0.
The week began with a trip to Karnes City Dec. 20 to face the Lady Badgers in their third district game of the season. The Pirettes earned a big lead in the first period of play, and never looked back en route to a 53-33 victory.
Poth had an explosive eight minutes during the first stanza, scoring 18 points while holding Karnes City to just 5. The Lady Badgers came back strong in the second period, though, outscoring the Pirettes by a point. When the buzzer signaled the end of the half, it was Poth with a comfortable lead, 28-16.
The third period looked a lot like the second, but this time it was Poth outscoring Karnes City. The Pirettes maintained a good lead heading into the fourth, and then closed the deal with a 14-point effort, leaving the final score at 53-33.
Tara Broyles, Micah Weaver, and Ashley Fuller each scored 8 points during the district matchup, and Jordan Kotara dropped in 7. Kelli Kolodziej and Danielle Felux each scored 6 points as well. The victory marked the third district win in as many tries.
The next day, Poth headed into San Antonio and took on the Class 5A Thunderbirds of Wagner. Poth had a difficult time with the matchups, however, and eventually fell by the score of 59-33.
Wagner jumped out to a double-digit lead to end the first period of play, and held a 31-18 advantage at the break. The Thunderbirds doubled up on Poth in the third by outscoring the Pirettes 14-7, and continued the trend in the fourth period with a 14-8 scoring advantage. The loss wasn’t taken lightly by Poth, but the team knows that every difficult opponent it faces helps prepare the Pirettes for a good postseason run.
Weaver led the Poth scoring effort with 8 on the night, followed by Kotara with 6 points. Fuller, Kolodziej, and Felux each scored 4 points during the game.
The Pirettes are scheduled to be off until the new year, resuming play on Friday, Dec. 6, in Dilley.
