Pirates start district with win over Badgers
KARNES CITY -- When the Karnes City Badgers and Poth Pirates face each other, it’s always a good game, regardless of the sport. Last Tuesday night in Karnes City proved to be no exception, as the two teams met in their first District 30-2A game of the year. Poth was able to come out on top of this one, and the Pirates returned home with a solid 53-40 win.
Poth opened play in the first quarter by outscoring the Badgers 14-2 on their own floor. Karnes City was able to score with much more success in the second stanza, but the Pirates once again outscored the Badgers 14-10, and took a 28-12 advantage into the break.
The teams looked evenly matched in the third period, but Poth still held a slight scoring advantage, and waltzed into the fourth and final period of regulation with a solid 42-25 lead.
Karnes City had its best scoring run of the game in the fourth, but couldn’t overcome the 17-point deficit, and fell to the visiting Pirates by the final score of 53-40. The win for Poth gave the Pirates a 1-0 district mark, while the Badgers start at 0-1.
Jacob Caloss led the Poth offensive efforts with 22 points on the night, followed by Aaron Friesenhahn with 11 and Dillon Zaiontz with 8 points. A hoard of Pirates were also in on the scoring, thanks to baskets from Kyler Felux, Seth Dunn, Spencer Flieller, Zach Lyssy, Jerrek Hosek, and Oscar Ramon.
The Pirates enjoyed a short break for Christmas, but were scheduled to return to the hardwood for tournament play Tuesday through Thursday, Dec. 27-29, in Boerne. Poth is set to resume its district schedule at home Tuesday, Jan. 3, as the team plays host to Natalia.
