FLORESVILLE -- In their final basketball game before the Christmas break, the Floresville Jaguars hosted the Corpus Christi King Mustangs, and handed the Class 5A team a big loss by the final score of 84-61.

Floresville senior guard Brittany Aikens dropped in the first 2 points of the game Dec. 19, and fellow senior Amanda Montoya followed suit to make it a 4-point game out of the blocks. King soon answered with its first basket of the night, but Erica Hernandez immediately answered the score as she drilled a 3-pointer to make the score 7-2.

Floresville maintained its lead throughout most of the first period, but as time wound down, the Jags watched their lead vanish. The Mustangs went on a 5-point run to end the first stanza, and the teams moved into the second period tied at 13-all.

Junior post Shelby Leinneweber scored the first 2 points of the second quarter from the free throw line for Floresville, and the Jags pulled back in front. King tied the game again, but it was a short-lived feeling for King, as the Jags kicked things into high gear and quickly pulled away from the Mustangs. With the score at 26-24, Floresville caught fire and ripped off 17 points before King could stop the run. When the buzzer sounded and the teams headed for the locker rooms, it was Floresville on top, 43-26.

King looked to turn things around in the second half, and actually scored the first 2 points of the third period, but Floresville senior Destiny Amaro drained a shot from beyond the 3-point arc, and quickly stopped any potential Mustang run before it could get started. By the end of the third, the Jags found themselves in clear control with a 65-45 lead.

The lead was nice, and would have made most coaches happy, but Floresville Head Coach Greg McWilliams expects intensity from his players up until the final buzzer, and the Jags came through for him. Floresville maintained its pressure style of play at both ends of the floor, and expanded its lead by another 3 points en route to an 84-61 victory.

Hernandez was the Jags’ leading scorer with 28 points in the game, followed by Aikens with 15. Amaro and DeHavalan Watts each scored 9 points for Floresville, and Leinneweber dropped in another 7. Liesel Raabe scored 6 points, Montoya and Jennifer Mahula each scored 4 points, and Felicia Fraga added 2.

With the win, the Jaguars improved their overall season record to 16-2. Floresville was scheduled to be off until Dec. 27, when the team traveled to Corpus Christi to compete in the West Oso tournament.
