Tigers fall to St. Anthony
Floresville’s Darren Orth (25) attempts to block a shot during the Tigers’ Dec. 19 loss to the St. Anthony Yellow Jackets.
FLORESVILLE -- Lack of varsity experience is one of the hurdles the Floresville Tiger basketball team is working to overcome this season. The team is learning and improving with every game, and last Monday proved to be a tough lesson for the Tigers, as St. Anthony controlled the paint and dictated the tempo of the game.
Floresville came out strong in the first period of play, and nearly matched the point production of the Yellow Jackets. When time expired in the period, the score stood at 13-12 in favor of St. Anthony.
The Tigers began to struggle in the second period of play, however, as the Yellow Jackets showed their dominance in the paint. St. Anthony showed patience on offense, and consistently found ways to get good looks at the basket. On defense, the Yellow Jackets did well at shutting down the Tigers, putting bodies in the low post and forcing difficult shots. When the clock expired on the first half, it was St. Anthony in the lead, 28-19.
The Tigers never stopped hustling for the ball, and scored several points in the second half on forced turnovers. The team also found ways to open up the lane, and the baskets began to fall. Still, St. Anthony held the advantage in shooting in the third, and led the game 43-27 after the third.
Floresville went on to outscore St. Anthony in the final stanza, but was unable to make up the gap created through the second and third periods of play. When the final buzzer sounded, it was the Yellow Jackets with the win, 50-35.
Jaron Medina and Rudy Mendiola led the Tigers in scoring with 7 points each, followed by Mason Ray and Darren Orth with 6 points apiece. Charlie Albert dropped in 5 points, Derek Moczygemba was good for 3, and Cody Payne sank a free throw.
With the loss, the Tigers fell to 8-7 on the season. The team was scheduled time off for the Christmas holiday, but is due to be back on the court Wednesday, Dec. 28, as the team travels to Corpus Christi to play in the Calallen tournament. The Tigers will begin District 30-4A competition Friday, Jan. 13, in Beeville.
