Stockdale art students shine in SA Western Art Contest
By Missy Rae Rust
The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo promotes the preservation of Western art by sponsoring a yearly contest. On Dec. 10, judges critiqued hundreds of student compositions from around the state of Texas with the following theme: “Western art is representational art of cowboys, Indians, wildlife, and the terrain of Western landscape.”
This contest is a major event. The top 14 high school students earn a place in a three-week art workshop in which they earn college credit at the university of their choice that is involved in this program. In addition, the top 25 first-place artworks are auctioned off and the money raised is returned to the student in the form of a college scholarship when they graduate from high school!
Stockdale High School participates in this wonderful opportunity every year. Last year and this year were a big success for our Brahma art students!
Caitlin Ryan-Granberry, a senior in Art III, earned a second-place ribbon for her pencil drawing interpretation of an Indian chief.
Lawrence Ogle, a senior in Art IV, placed third for his Wild West with cowboys blazing through a Western town.
Mikayla Rangel, a senior in Art III, earned a third-place ribbon for her pasture of horses.
Nick Bosell-Maples, a junior this year, placed third with a detailed drawing of a man walking with his rifle slung over his shoulder.
These fine artists did an outstanding job this year. Not everyone earns a placement ribbon. Some artists receive participation awards and are encouraged to try again next year; however, our Brahma artists all earned ribbons and should be congratulated on their hard work and dedication!
All of the above-mentioned artwork is displayed proudly in the foyer of Stockdale High School for viewing through the end of January 2012.
