Although 2011 was a year for the ag industry to battle Mother Nature through record cold and heat, it also brought honors and achievements for some locals in the ag industry.

•Hondo FFA member Colin Graff earned the national reserve champion title in the Delo Tractor Restoration Contest. His sponsors were Clinton and James Noll of Falls City.

•Nixon-Smiley FFA member Connor Caraway was a dual winner, exhibiting a third-place steer in the Fort Worth Stock Show and the reserve champion steer during the 2011 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.

•The Old Chisholm Trail Drivers celebrated their 50th anniversary ride to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in February.

•Kyle Sells, Jake Pieniazek, and Joshua Garcia of the Texas A&M Poultry Judging team won the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association National Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest.

•Wayne Stroud of Stockdale was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame.

•Andrew Korus of Stockdale was honored for 40 years of rainfall reporting by the Austin/San Antonio National Weather Service Office.

•Dennis Hale, Wilson County Extension agent, was the recipient of the Outstanding Beef County Extension Agent award.

•Alton and Pat Kuykendall of Floresville received the Independent Cattlemen’s Association’s Trailblazer award, nominated by South Central Texas Chapter of the Independent Cattlemen’s Association.

•East Central FFA and Clemens 4-H Club member Kylie Patterson was named president of the Texas Club Calf Association.

•Ryan Henderson of Stockdale, trainer of Miss Izzy Fine, exhibited and won the world title in the 2011 World Championship Show of the International Buckskin Horse Association.

•Jessica Willey of La Vernia exhibited the reserve champion American heifer in the fourth annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Calf Scramble Progress Show in Humble.

•The Pawelek-Moczygemba Coyote Place was named a Family Land Heritage honoree.

•Ropin’ Dreams celebrated its 10th anniversary. Founded by Dub and Cindy McClister of Marion, it provides a day of smiles for children ages 4-18 with life-threatening illnesses or injuries.

•Dreamers Knight trainer A.J. Garcia of La Vernia rode the gelding to three world and reserve championship titles during the American Paint Horse Association’s World Championship Paint Horse Show. The gelding is owned by J.O. and Janie Haley, also of La Vernia.

•Kody Lucherk, a 2008 graduate of Poth High School and member of the Texas Tech University livestock judging team, earned the National Collegiate Livestock Judging title, the National Barrow Show title, and the American Royal Livestock Judging Contest.

•The East Central FFA Floriculture team of Brooke Kosub, Christi Schick, Holly Bailey, and Amy Castleman was rated “gold” and placed 12th in the nation during the National FFA Floriculture Career Development Event, and Lindsay Hamer placed second in the AgriScience Fair.

•State FFA Leadership Development Contest winners included the East Central FFA radio broadcast team, state title; the Floresville FFA Public Relations Team, fifth place; and three teams from the La Vernia FFA all placed in the top 10.

•The Wilson County Farm Bureau reached the 3,000 mark in membership.

•Kenneth Dierschke was re-elected to his 10th term as president of the Texas Farm Bureau, with Russell Boening of Wilson County elected as secretary-treasurer.

•The Wilson County News’ “Ag Today” earned honorable mention in the Suburban Newspaper Association Editorial contest for the second year in a row for “best environmental coverage series” for articles on greenhouse-gas emissions.
