A CNN story about a Durango, Colorado, high-school senior's picture being rejected for publication in the yearbook is causing controversy across the nation -- and, of course, on the Internet.

My first reaction was to question why this was even a story, but I quickly came to see that it is more than just a story. It is a big story with a lot of twists and turns.

The photo submitted for the yearbook committee’s approval shows 18-year-old Sydney Spies in a very provocative pose wearing a short skirt and revealing top. She apparently wanted something different than all the usual staid yearbook photos. The committee rejected it as being inappropriate.

Sydney's mother, Miki Spies, disagrees. She believes that her daughter should be able to express herself just like any other student.

They have contacted the ACLU.

Her mother explains on her own Facebook page that, because of the number of friend requests, Sydney Elizabeth Spies had to open a fan page for public figures. One post on Sydney’s fan page tells her that if she would spend the “time and energy to go to auditions to become a model ... instead of trying to fight the school, you'd be famous by now.”

Oh, but she is famous. Headlines from today’s Durango Herald announced: Sydney Spies to be on ‘Today Show.’ Her mother also appeared, and seems to be enjoying the attention as much as anyone, which leads me to question her judgment as a parent.

She is surprised by the negative comments, but the controversy has only strengthened her resolve to fight for her daughter. "I'm a fighter for the underdog, and I hate the abuse of authority," she writes. "I'm surprised more Americans aren't on the side of freedom of expression anymore."

It’s not a case of freedom of the press. We are talking high-school yearbook here, as in an educational environment.

Meanwhile, the hapless Sydney posted on her FB: “I just don't understand why people care so much.”

It’s like this, Hon. They don’t care about you. It’s just a topic of conversation to divert attention away from the incessant political coverage out of New Hampshire.

Watching national news today is like watching a Hollywood gosip show. This is an example. But, that is not the subject. Our system (every system) has become so permissive and liberal - the "screws" have become so... More ›
