The angels came to take Irene Erna Vasbinder to heaven on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at the age of 90. She was born Feb. 20, 1921, to Walter Charles and Amanda Borgfeld Niemann.

Being there for her family came naturally and everyone who knew Irene has lost someone so unforgettable, unselfish, and loving. We were all blessed to be a part of her life. Her biggest accomplishment was being a wife, mom, grandma, and great-grandma.

She married John “Jack” Murray Vasbinder on Sept. 16, 1939, and they had 60 wonderful years together. They taught their children the importance of love, giving, sacrifice, respect, responsibility, and good work ethics. Irene worked alongside Jack on the farm driving the tractor and grain trucks.

Irene loved to embroider and sew keepsakes for family members and gardening, where she shared the vegetables with many and her flowers, which will bring us joy for years to come. In later years, she enjoyed gambling trips with Jack and other family members.

She was surrounded by her family, who were there to express their love for her and to give thanks for all the love she had given them over the years.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; her sisters; her husband; a son, Walter Murray; and daughter-in-law Pat.

Survivors include her children, daughter-in-law Rosie, James, Larry and Algerine, Earl, Carolyn Haley and Dennis, John and Jaminia, Fayerene Smith and Charles Ed, William and Cindy, and Wanda Kosub and Steven. Her pride and joy were the 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and two on the way.

Irene is one of God’s special angels. We love her and she is eternally in our hearts.

The celebration of Irene’s life was held Friday, Jan. 6, in the Southside Funeral Home in San Antonio, Texas, from 3-8 p.m., with a funeral service on Saturday in the Good News Lutheran Church in San Antonio at 3 p.m.

Interment followed in the Cover Cemetery in Adkins.

Serving as pallbearers were her beloved grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were Davis Blalock and Orion Knox.

The family would like to thank Vitas Hospice care group 552 for their loving support.

Memorials may be made to Life Church of La Vernia, P.O. Box 1440, La Vernia, TX 78121.
