Benita Alvarez 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, in her home in Smiley, Texas. She was born March 21, 1925, in Gonzales, and was a member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Smiley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Crescencio and Rita (Garcia) Galvan; her husband, Felipe Alvarez; her son, Raymond Alvarez; her son-in-law, Domingo Garcia; four brothers; and three sisters.

Benita is survived by her daughters, Minnie Garcia of Smiley, Mary Lynn Alvarez of Smiley, and Delores Lazo of Nixon; her sons, Frank Alvarez of Smiley, John Alvarez of Smiley, Ray Alvarez of Nixon, and Felipe Alvarez Jr. of Smiley; her brothers, Fidencio Galvan, Crescencio Galvan, and Jesse Galvan; her sisters, Josie Luna, Inez Hernandez, Janie Herrera, Tina Galvan, Modesta Galvan, and Frances Galvan; 22 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and other family and many friends.

Visitation was held Friday, Jan. 6, from 3-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon. A rosary was recited at 6:30 p.m. with Deacon John Moreno leading.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Smiley with Father Alfonso Gioppato officiating.

Interment followed in the Burriola Cemetery near Smiley.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
