LA VERNIA -- The Lady Bear varsity basketball team hosted a tournament over the holiday break, and the home team eventually finished with a pair of wins and a pair of losses.

The first team on tap for La Vernia was Marion. The Bulldogs struggled in the first period, but made up for it in the second and handed the Lady Bears their first loss of the event.

While La Vernia led 6-4 after the first period of play, Marion scored 21 in the second period and led 25-20 at the break. The Bulldogs pulled out to a 38-26 lead after three, and posted another 15 points in the fourth period to give them a 53-35 win over the Lady Bears.

In their second game of the tournament, the Lady Bears squared off with the Lady Horns of Schulenburg. La Vernia never really got into the game, and eventually fell by the score of 53-19.

The Lady Horns jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the first period of play, and went into the locker room at halftime with a 27-7 advantage. Schulenburg outscored La Vernia 18-9 in third period to lead 45-16, and then put it away in the fourth at 53-19.

The next draw for La Vernia was the team from Brooks Academy, and the Lady Bears unloaded on the Lady Bengals, 54-19.

La Vernia had a sizable 16-2 lead after the first period of play, but then allowed Brooks to claw its way back into the mix. When the buzzer sounded the end of the first half, it was La Vernia with a 21-14 lead.

The third period made the game for the Lady Bears, as La Vernia ripped off 22 unanswered points and carried a 43-14 lead into the final stanza. The Lady Bears continued to apply pressure to Brooks in the fourth, and eventually secured the 54-19 victory.

The Lady Bears met Lytle on the floor for their final game of the tournament, and La Vernia made it count as the team earned a 37-26 win.

Lytle led the game by the score of 6-4 after the first period, but La Vernia came on strong in the second to lead 14-9 at the break. The Lady Bears then outscored Lytle 14-6 in the third period, and held a comfortable 28-15 advantage to start the final period. Lytle managed to outscore La Vernia in those final eight minutes, but the visitors couldn’t overcome the deficit, and fell to the Lady Bears, 37-26.
