GVEC Encourages Preparation for Freezing Weather

Gonzales, Texas-- January 12, 2012 -- With temperatures expected to drop below freezing in south central Texas for the next two nights, the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC) is encouraging you to be prepared.

· Protect exposed water pipes by covering them with insulation or newspapers and then wrapping them in plastic to keep them dry.
· Allow faucets to drip a little to avoid freezing.
· Disconnect garden hoses, and shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets.
· Bring in your pets until temperatures warm up.
· Cover or bring in cold-sensitive plants.

Although high winds and ice haven’t been predicted, it’s a good idea to add GVEC’s number for reporting outages to your cell phone: 800-223-4832. To track current outages in the GVEC service area, you can access their new outage tracking map via home computer or mobile device by visiting www.gvec.org and clicking on the “View Current Outages” icon. Plug into GVEC on Facebook and GVEC_Tweets on Twitter for additional tips and updates.

GVEC is an electric cooperative that serves over 68,000 meters across 13 Texas counties. The service area spans 3,500 square miles across South Central Texas. The headquarters is located in Gonzales, Texas with four area offices in the cities of Schertz, Seguin, La Vernia and Cuero.
