Hundreds of volunteers involved in the homebuilding project by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (EMHE) and Morgan’s Wonderland for a deserving wounded warrior and his family.

Work began today and will be going on around the clock to build a house for the Shilo Harris family in just a week when the keys to the new home are presented to the family on Saturday, Jan. 21.

On Feb. 19, 2007, while on patrol in Iraq, Army SSgt. Shilo Harris was critically injured after the truck he was riding in struck an IED. His face was literally melted away. Despite suffering burns over 40 percent of his body, Harris focused on the safety and well-being of the men under his command before allowing himself to receive treatment.

During endless months of painful surgeries, Harris and his loyal wife, Kathreyn, found their true calling -- to help wounded warriors through the agonizing and traumatic process of recovering, rehabilitating and learning to bravely face a life forever altered. Once sufficiently healed, Harris began a career as a motivational speaker, giving hope to those similarly impacted. Taking up the cause as well, Kathreyn began working for the Army Wounded Warrior Project.

With each passing day, the Harris family puts more distance between themselves and the event that reshaped their lives. Unfortunately, their present home stands as a constant reminder of their struggles. Its inability to protect Harris from dust and heat inhibits him from living a normal life. His suffering is a constant reminder of the devastating injuries he suffered. The family has tried everything to make the home comfortable for Harris, but whatever they do, it’s not enough. This hero who was burned and disfigured while fighting for America’s freedom cannot find respite in his own home.

While their new home is being built, the Harris family has been whisked away on a dream vacation to Landstuhl, Germany, so that Shilo and Kathreyn can meet with
wounded warriors who have recently returned from the field. Meanwhile, EMHE team leader Ty Pennington, designers Michael Moloney, Paige Hemmis, Ed Sanders and Xzibit, along with Morgan’s Wonderland and community volunteers, will build the structure.

The homebuilding site is at 2270 County Road 306, approximately seven miles east of Floresville off State Highway 97 (between Floresville and Stockdale).
