KOSCIUSKO (revised) -- One driver is dead following a near head-on collision at approximately 1 p.m. Jan. 17 on S.H. 123 approximately 1 mile north of F.M. 541 near here.

Ralph Michael Casteel, 50, of Lockhart was pronounced dead at the scene by Sara Canady, justice of the peace for Wilson County Pct. 2, according to Trooper Al Alejos of the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol. This was after his southbound Saturn Aura sedan collided with a northbound tractor-trailer driven by Alexi Ramirez-Salabarria, 42, of New Braunfels. Ramirez-Salabarria was not injured.

Alejos said witnesses reported that Casteel's vehicle was swerving and that he was unable to maintain a lane in the moments leading up to the crash. Because there was no evidence of alcohol in his vehicle, Alejos said Casteel might have been fatigued.

Traffic on S.H. 123 was shut down in both directions until approximately 5:30 p.m., Alejos said.
