Ernesto Gonzales Jr., 45, of Floresville, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012. Ernesto was born on July 12, 1966, in Mason to Maria Soledad Ojeda and Ernesto Gonzalez Sr.

He graduated from Mason High School and attended TSTI in Waco. He later graduated from St. Philip’s College in San Antonio as a surgical technician. He worked at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio for 10 years, as well as the American Red Cross Organ and Tissue Bank. Ernesto later pursued his profession by obtaining a national certification that allowed him to work throughout the United States as a certified surgical first assistant. With his certification, he worked in Illinois, Ohio, Florida, and Maryland, where Ernesto, his wife Velma, and dog “Chiquita” lived for six years before returning to Floresville in 2006. He was employed at Northeast Methodist Hospital for a short while before becoming ill in 2007. His passion and level of expertise was working as a first assistant in open heart surgery. He was proud of his work and always happy to help save lives.

Ernesto loved the outdoors, traveling, amusement parks, and enjoyed working outside. Ernesto was a smart, loving, wonderful husband, brother, and friend and will be greatly missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Maria Soledad Ojeda Gonzalez.

Ernesto is survived by his wife of 19 years, Velma Gonzales of Floresville; his father, Ernesto Gonzalez Sr. of Mason; and his sister, Maribel Gonzales Lang and husband James of Boerne.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m. followed by a vigil and rosary at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church-Honey Creek in Spring Branch.

A funeral Mass was held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the church.

Interment followed in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery in Saspamco.
