Powerlifters from Stockdale shine at recent UTSA meet
SAN ANTONIO -- It may have been just the first powerlifting meet of the season, but the athletes from Stockdale took the competition seriously when they traveled to San Antonio Jan. 6 to compete in the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunner High School Powerfest meet. Both the boys and girls put in a good effort, and the team returned home with several pieces of hardware.
In girls competition, the three lifters from Stockdale who participated each made a good showing. Roxy Bischak finished first overall in her weight class, as she powered up a total of 610 pounds. Bischak had a bench press of 105 pounds, a squat of 225 pounds, and muscled up an impressive 280 pounds in the deadlift en route to her gold-medal victory.
Lacey Dugi and Kristin Moore were also impressive at UTSA, as they each competed in the 123-pound class. Dugi finished third overall with a bench press of 90 pounds, a squat of 165, and a deadlift of 205 pounds for a total of 460 pounds. Moore was close behind in fifth place with a total of 440 pounds, having lifted 85 in bench press, 150 in squat, and 205 pounds in the dead lift.
On the guys side, 2011 state qualifier Darion McMahan continued to impress, as he won the 148-pound class by nearly 300 pounds over the second-place lifter. McMahan bench pressed more than twice his own body weight at 300 pounds, lifted 405 pounds in the deadlift, and turned in a squat of 435. His 1,140-pound total easily gave him the gold over the second place finisher with a total of 845 pounds.
John Dugi represented the Brahmas in the 132-pound class, and he also won a gold medal with a total weight of 885 pounds. Dugi powered up a 205-pound bench press, a 315-pound squat, and a deadlift of 365 pounds.
Christian Rodriguez, Conner McLaughlin, and Matt Valadez were also in town to compete for the Brahmas, and will undoubtedly improve upon their performances at the next meet.
“This was a great experience for all of the lifters,” said Stockdale Powerlifting Coach Michael Enriquez. “This meet gives us our starting point for workouts and hopefully leads to a great year.”
The next powerlifting meet for Stockdale will be this Saturday, Jan. 21, in Poteet. The Brahmas and Lady Brahmas will host a powerlifting meet of their own Saturday, Feb. 11, in Stockdale.
