Floresville Jags remain unbeaten in district play

After a pair of convincing wins on the road last week, the Floresville Jaguar varsity basketball team was set to battle for top district honors. The Jags beat Victoria West by the score of 80-52, and then traveled to Beeville, where they knocked off the Lady Trojans. 94-68.
During their Jan. 10 game with Victoria West, the Jaguars started a little slower than the Lady Warriors, but quickly made up the ground.
West started the game by scoring the first two baskets of the contest, but Floresville senior guard Erica “Goose” Hernandez drilled a 3-pointer to narrow the gap, and Amanda Montoya sank a pair of free throws to give Floresville a lead it would never relinquish. Hernandez, Montoya, Brittany Aikens, and Liesel Raabe all continued to score in the first period, and the Jags took a 23-13 lead into the second.
Junior post Shelby Leinneweber sank a free throw and dropped in a shot to open the second-stanza scoring run, and Hernandez made it a 13-point advantage after her first trip to the charity stripe. Senior Destiny Amaro and sophomore DeHavalan Watts also got in on the scoring action, and Floresville went into halftime with a sizable 46-23 lead.
Leinneweber dropped in the first 2 points of the second half from the free-throw line, and then Hernandez and Amaro sank a couple of shots. Aikens drilled one from 3-point land, and Raabe followed suit with a long ball of her own. When the buzzer sounded the end of the third period, it was Floresville on top 62-36.
The first points of the final stanza came from Hernandez, and Montoya padded the lead a bit more from the free-throw line. Watts caught fire in the closing minutes of the fourth period, and Mireya Garza scored the Jaguars’ final 4 points of the game en route to their 80-52 win.
Hernandez led the team in scoring with 20 points, followed by Aikens with 18, and Amaro and Raabe with 9 points each. As a team, the Jags drilled 10 three-pointers, and put another notch in the wins column.
Floresville then went back on the road Jan. 13, as the team traveled to Beeville. Aikens scored the first 3 points of the game with a shot from beyond the arc, and Leinneweber soon made it a 5-0 affair. The Lady Trojans finally got on the board, scoring back-to-back baskets to pull within a point. That was as close as Beeville would get, however, and the Jags led 20-11 at the end of the first period.
Watts scored the first 4 Floresville points of the second period, and the Jaguars turned up the heat from there. Five different players scored a total of 28 Floresville points in the second stanza, and the Jags cruised into halftime with a 48-30 advantage.
Aikens and Montoya got the scoring going in the second half, and Amaro and Raabe soon joined the party. The Jaguars played another great period of defense, too, and Floresville led Beeville 74-44 at the end of the third period.
Beeville got onto a short run to start the final eight minutes, but the run was stopped and answered with baskets from Leinneweber, Hernandez, and Amaro. Aikens, Montoya, Felisha Fraga, and Payton Cannon put together a nice Floresville run in the middle of the period to put the Jags on top by 40 points at 90-50, and then pulled back slightly on the reins. When the final buzzer sounded, it was all Floresville, 94-68.
Aikens led the team with 21 points, followed by Hernandez with 18, and Montoya and Leinneweber with 14 points each.
The Jags were scheduled to travel to Victoria to face the Victoria East Titans Jan. 17. The winner will lay claim, at least temporarily, to the top spot in District 30-4A. The team will also travel to Port Lavaca this Friday, Jan. 20.
