The South Texas stock show season is under way, with the road leading to Karnes County. This week, Karnes County youth will shine in the ring beginning Thursday, Jan. 19. The Karnes County Youth Show concludes with an auction, set for Saturday, Jan. 21, at 3 p.m.

The broiler show will begin the event in the Karnes County Youth Show Barn, located off U.S. 181, between Karnes City and Kenedy. The day’s events include judging of turkeys, followed by the lamb show and the goat show.

Judging of the handicraft show will be at 4 p.m. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to show their original crafting techniques, such as needlework, painting, drawing, general machine, wood crafts, and woodworking. Other categories include photography, welding, and a miscellaneous category that includes puzzles.

Judging of commercial steers kicks off Friday’s events at 8 a.m., followed by judging of food entries at 9:30 a.m. The day will also include the hog show at 10 a.m., followed by the breeding cattle show and the halter steer show.

The homemaking sale will be Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday’s events include the homemaking awards presentation at noon and the buyers party at 1 p.m., prior to the auction at 3 p.m.

Prior to the auction, at 2:30 p.m. “The Friends of the Karnes County Youth Show” presentation and showmanship awards will take place.

See schedule on page 2D for the complete listing of events for the Karnes County Youth Show.

The youth of Wilson County will have their opportunity to shine in the ring beginning Saturday, Jan. 21, with the horse show.

The events pick up again on Wednesday, Jan. 25, and conclude Saturday, Jan. 28, with the Wilson County Junior Livestock & Baked Food Show Auction sale at 2 p.m. (See the Jan. 25 issue of the Wilson County News for complete schedule.)

The stock show season continues with two major shows in Fort Worth and San Antonio. The final show within the county -- La Vernia -- is set for early March.
