SAN ANTONIO --CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital--Westover Hills and AugustHeart, powered by Championship Hearts Foundation, Texas 501(c)(3) nonprofit agencies, will offer FREE heart screenings for student athletes ages 14 - 18, Saturday, January 21, 2012, from 1 to 5 p.m. at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital--Westover Hills, located at 11212 State Highway 151.

Active students who participate in athletics/cheer/drill/dance/band or other strenuous activities are encouraged to get their heart screened for potentially deadly genetic heart conditions such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. It is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

“Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a genetic heart condition that usually doesn’t impair physical activity, but it is a set up for a potentially fatal rhythm problem that could happen right on the playing field,” said Dr. George Rodgers, President of Championship Hearts Foundation. “Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is very difficult to pick up during a physical examination, but is very easy to detect with an echocardiogram.”

The AugustHeart screening includes a 12-lead electrocardiogram and a limited two-dimensional echocardiogram, or picture of the heart, to detect Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Both exams are non-invasive and painless and are valued over $700. Results of the screening are immediate. The Championship Hearts screening model is endorsed by the Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology as a quality initiative.

This FREE screening is made possible in part, by the complementary use of facilities and equipment at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital--Westover Hills and the volunteer time of local cardiologists. More than 12,000 students have been screened by Championship Hearts during the last decade, with approximately 5 percent of those having been referred for further cardiac testing.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to accompany their student during the tests. Pre-registration is available online at www.augustheart.org. Upon pre-registration you will be given an arrival time for check-in at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital -- Westover Hills KidsSTOP. Free parking is available.

Students must have a signed parental waiver in order to receive the heart screening. That waiver will be available at the event and is also available to download when registering online at: www.augustheart.org. There is no charge for the screening; however, a tax-deductible contribution of $25 is appreciated and helps to fund AugustHeart programming.

For more information, visit www.augustheart.org or call 210-841-9207.
