LA VERNIA -- Superintendent Tom Harvey of the La Vernia Independent School District has confirmed that a student has come forward with allegations of being slapped by a teacher.

Harvey said he first learned Jan. 23 of the charge made against Cynthia Dinan, who teaches fine arts and speech in the La Vernia Junior High School. The superintendent said he was not sure how many years Dinan has been employed with the district, but the State Board for Educator Certification indicates she first became certified to teach in Texas in 2004.

An investigation is under way by the La Vernia Police Department and Child Protective Services, which is part of the district’s standard procedure. Dinan has been suspended with pay pending its outcome, Harvey said. He also said the district is cooperating with the authorities and it takes such allegations quite seriously.
