The January Floresville High School female student of the month is Kathryn Donnell, the 18-year-old daughter of Raquel and Joe Donnell.

Kathryn has been a leader among her peers in the Air Force Junior ROTC. During the fall semester, she was the unit’s Deputy Corps Commander and this spring she will serve as the Corps Commander. In addition, she was named Cadet of the Month during both her sophomore and junior years.

In addition to ROTC, Kathryn is a member of Link Crew, serving as a peer mentor to assist incoming freshmen with their transition into high school. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and received the Outstanding Student of the Year award for algebra as a freshman.

Kathryn is also very active in her community, volunteering her time and talents through community-service projects. She has participated in Adopt-A-Highway projects and collected donations for Toys for Tots. She also assisted in setting up for Floresville’s annual Peanut Festival Coronation.

Upon graduation in June, Kathryn plans to attend the University of North Texas, where she will pursue a degree in filmmaking.

The January male student of the month is Gilberto Perez, the 17-year-old son of Dolores Smith.

Gilberto has been very active in FHS organizations. As a member of Link Crew, he serves as a peer mentor for incoming freshmen, assisting them in making a smooth transition into high school. He is also a member of the Red Cross and Spanish clubs.

As a member of the FHS athletics program, Gilberto has received honors in varsity track, powerlifting, and football. He was also a member of the Mighty Tiger Band.

For his efforts in the classroom, Gilberto has earned several honors. He is a member in good standing with the National Honor Society. He has been named to the “A” Honor Roll and received the Outstanding Student of the Year award for Business Communication Information Systems. He is currently in the top 10 percent of his class with a 4.0 grade-point average.

When not busy with academic and extracurricular activities, Gilberto is volunteering in his community. He has participated in Habitat for Humanity and Adopt-A-Highway projects. Gilberto was a member of Shattered Dreams, teaching his peers about the dangers of drinking and driving.

Upon graduation in June, Gilberto plans to either pursue a career in the military or receive a degree in either criminal justice or civil engineering. He is considering attending Arizona State University, Sam Houston State University, or A&M University-Kingsville.
