Jags build momentum en route to rematch with Victoria East
FLORESVILLE -- When the Floresville Jaguars take to the hardwood this Friday, Feb. 3, and square off with the Victoria East Lady Titans, there will be a lot of emotion to the game. After all, the Lady Titans are responsible for the one blemish to the Jags’ district record. In addition, the contest will be Floresville’s final home game of the season, it is senior night, and, as if that weren’t enough, the district championship will be on the line. The atmosphere will be electric.
Jaguar Head Coach Greg McWilliams knows his players have to be at the top of their game if they are to topple Victoria East. The girls got a great start to redemption last week, as they knocked off Gregory-Portland and Victoria West with relative ease.
Floresville began last week with a solid 68-53 win at home. Senior guard Erica “Goose” Hernandez scored the first 2 points of the game, and fellow senior Destiny Amaro broke up a short Lady Wildcat run with a bucket of her own. Shelby Leinneweber, DeHavalan Watts, Liesel Raabe, and Brittany Aikens all went on to score in the period, and the teams moved into the second stanza tied at 15-all.
Watts drilled a 3-pointer to begin the scoring in the second period, and Hernandez soon followed suit. Leinneweber, Aikens, and Raabe continued to score in the second, and the Jags went into halftime with an 11-point lead at 34-23.
The defenses stiffened on each end of the floor in the second half, as both teams were held to 10 in the third. Gregory-Portland scored first to make it a 34-25 game, but Amanda Montoya got the bucket back for Floresville. Amaro drained a pair of 3-pointers to put the Jags on top 42-25, but the Lady Wildcats responded with a run of their own. Gregory-Portland rattled off 8 points in a row, but Montoya stopped the run with a basket for Floresville, and the period ended with the score 44-33.
The fourth period was quite different for both teams, as the scoring action resumed and the game’s pace quickened. Leinneweber dropped in the first two baskets of the final stanza, and the Lady Wildcats responded with a pair of baskets, too. Amaro broke up the run for Floresville, and Aikens got back in the action. The momentum continued back and forth, and Gregory-Portland added 20 points to the board, but Floresville maintained the scoring advantage, and held on for the win, 68-53.
The Jags then traveled to Victoria Jan. 27 to take on the Lady Warriors of Victoria West. The home team scored the first basket of the game, but Hernandez responded for Floresville by drilling a 3 from beyond the arc. Leinneweber dropped in a free throw, and Hernandez scored a second time, giving Floresville a 6-2 lead. Watts, Aikens, Jennifer Mahula, Amaro, and Raabe all got in on the first-period scoring effort, and the Jags led 34-15 after the first period of play.
Leinneweber scored the first 7 Jaguar points of the second period, and then Aikens and Hernandez got in on the scoring action. Floresville made things look easy on the road, and went into halftime with a comfy 56-22 lead.
The onslaught continued in the second half, as Victoria West had little answer for the Jaguar offensive. Everyone got in on the scoring for Floresville, and the score was 84-33 after three.
The teams were pretty much just rolling through the motions in the fourth, as it was clear there was no way for Victoria West to overcome the 51-point deficit it had fallen into. When the final buzzer sounded, it was Floresville with the big win, 95-42.
The wins bumped Floresville up to 6-1 in district play. The Jags are solidly at No. 2 in District 30-4A right behind Victoria East. If the Jags are able to win this Friday evening, it would leave the teams in a tie for the district’s top prize. If Victoria East pulls out the win, however, the district title is all theirs.
The Jaguars and Lady Titans will square off this Friday, Feb. 3, in Floresville. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
