Stockdale powerlifters clean up in Poteet
Makaley Perez competes in the deadlift during her first powerlifting meet. Perez finished second in her weight class.
POTEET -- After another strong showing in Poteet Jan. 21, the Stockdale powerlifting team is feeling good about its season, and team members are beginning to rack up the awards.
In girls competition, Kristen Moore won a gold medal for herself and Stockdale, finishing first in the 123-pound class. She turned in a bench press of 90 pounds, a squat of 165, and an impressive deadlift of 245 pounds. For Moore, her total of 500 pounds was a 60-pound improvement from her last meet.
Lacey Dugi also represented Stockdale in the 123-pound class, and she finished right behind Moore in second place, also with a total lift of 500 pounds. Dugi had a bench press of 90 pounds, a squat of 175, and a deadlift of 235 pounds. It was a 40-pound improvement for Dugi.
Competing in the 105-pound class, Makaley Perez powered up a total of 465 pounds to finish second in her weight class in just her first powerlifting meet. Her bench press of 80 pounds, squat of 175, and deadlift of 210 pounds were more than enough to give her a silver medal in Poteet.
Kyndall Davis was also competing in her first meet, as she made the trip to Poteet for Stockdale. Davis didn’t get to climb on the podium, but made a good first showing with a total weight of 480 pounds. She lifted 90 pounds in the bench press, and turned in a squat and deadlift of 195 pounds.
Over on the guys side of things, Darion McMahan and Matt Valadez led the way for Stockdale.
McMahan continued to impress everyone as he powered up a total of 1,200 pounds en route to another first-place finish and the eventual “outstanding lightweight lifter” award. The junior, who competes in the 132-pound weight class, turned in a staggering bench press of 305 pounds, had a deadlift of 440 pounds, and managed a squat of 455 pounds, nearly triple his own body weight.
Valadez competed in the 148-pound class, and also won a first-place medal in his first powerlifting meet. He had a bench press of 250 pounds, a squat of 405, and muscled up 430 pounds in the deadlift.
Christian Rodriguez was also in competition for the Brahmas, as he participated in the 181-pound class. Rodriguez didn’t medal, but did improve his weight totals by 75 pounds to 1,040. He had a bench press of 225 pounds, a squat of 390, and a deadlift of 425 pounds.
“The kids are doing a great job and working hard,” said Head Coach Michael Enriquez. “The hard work that they are putting in is starting to pay off.”
The Stockdale powerlifting team will be back in action this Saturday, Feb. 4, when they travel to Yorktown. The Brahmas and Lady Brahmas will then host their first-ever meet in Stockdale Saturday, Feb. 11.
