GERONIMO -- The Poth powerlifting teams traveled to Navarro this past Saturday. The boys team was represented by only David Delacruz and Kolby Janek, as the other Pirate lifters missed the meet for one reason or another.

Delacruz finished eighth in his weight class, and Janek put up impressive numbers finishing fifth in his weight class. Janek turned in a squat of 400 pounds, a bench press of 290, and a deadlift of 425 pounds for a 1,115-pound total.

On the girls side, five new lifters made their Poth powerlifting debut. Among them were Erin Chacon, Amber Rangel, Kayla Feliciano, Kadalina Escobedo, and Marisol Palacios. The new lifters learned valuable lessons and experienced some early success.

Rangel earned a seventh-place finish, Feliciano was fourth in her weight class, Palacios won a silver medal in second place, and Escobedo took home gold in her weight class.

Along with the new lifters, several Poth veteran girls had very strong showings, as well. Yarisa Ramon finished second in her weight class, while Daniella Noguez and Jessica Coronado each grabbed gold. Coronado also earned the best lifter award for the girls side, followed very closely by Noguez, who was the second-best overall lifter at the meet.

The Poth girls team finished with 33 points and earned a first-place team finish, besting the teams from Lockhart, Seguin, Gonzales, Universal-City Randolph, Buda-Hayes, and Geronimo-Navarro.

Coach Tim Bordovsky gave a special thanks to injured Pirate powerlifter Chase Wiatrek for all his hard work at the meet. He said that having Wiatrek’s help was “like having another coach there.”

“The kids really did an outstanding job at the meet,” Bordovsky said. “They learned so much about the sport and competed well.

“One of the things that stood out to me was how the older kids took the younger ones under their wing at the meet and worked so closely with them,” he added. “I don’t think a coach could ask for a better group of people to work with. It really is a special and close group, and I am really looking forward to seeing them improve each week. It’s going to be an exciting season.”
