‘Build a barn ... raise a child’
With shovels in hand, members of the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show (BCJLS) board broke ground Nov. 3, 2011 for a 7,000-square-foot pavilion. Joining in the celebration are (from left) Madelyn Schott, BCJLS assistant treasurer; Gary Schott, BCJLS treasurer; Butch Galm, chairman of the land committee; Tom Fletcher and Dalton Evans of the land committee; Leslie Johnson of Allied Waste; Clarence Sultenfuss, BCJLS president; and Rick Fulks of Speedway Builders Inc.
The board of directors for the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show held a pavilion ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 14 for a 7,000-square-foot pavilion. Funding for this pavilion was made possible from a memorial donation from the Charlie Simon family. Charlie had a dream of “Build a barn ... raise a child” and he chose the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show Building Fund for his memorial donation choice.
Bexar County Junior Livestock Show President Clarence Sultenfuss and Land and Building Committee Chairman Harold Galm II are very excited about the progress that has been made. The property was donated to the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show by Allied Waste, and is located at 7701 F.M. 1346, east of Martinez in Bexar County.
Harold Galm, Muriel Steubing, Roland Weidner, C.E. Vickery, Marvin Finto, and Billy W. Spannagel were some of the 1963 organizers of the show from this area. Today, the directors from the north side of the county include Harold Galm Jr., Gary and Madelyn Schott, Brenda Schuh, Steve Eckhardt, Randy Harmon, Isabel Pruneda, Dalton Evans, and Tammy Carpenter.
The Bexar County Junior Livestock Show will be celebrating its 50th Junior Livestock Show in January 2013.
