SUTHERLAND SPRINGS -- A 63-year-old La Vernia woman has died from injuries sustained in a Feb. 1 crash on U.S. 87 just north of F.M. 539 here, officials said.

Johnnie Henry was pronounced dead in Connally Memorial Medical Center at 5:15 a.m. Feb. 2, said Troop-er Al Alejos of the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol. She was one of six passengers in a 1984 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 50-year-old Mark Higdon, also of La Vernia. Alejos said Higdon was making a left turn from southbound U.S. 87 into the driveway of a business when a 2005 Ford Excursion traveling northbound on U.S. 87 struck the vehicle. Neither Higdon nor the driver of the Excursion -- 38-year-old James Croft of Waco -- was injured.

Higdon’s remaining passengers were transported to area hospitals.

Our prayers are with the victims of this crash. Perhaps it is time to reduce the speed limit on Hwy 87 -- any effort to save lives is good.
