Frank Leslie Bain Sr.
Josephine and Frank Bain Sr.
Within four days of wife Josephine’s passing, Frank Leslie Bain Sr. went home to be with her and their Lord on Friday morning, Feb. 3, 2012. Frank was born Nov. 10, 1919, to James Henry and Ada Whitsett Bain in San Antonio, Texas. In 1934, the Bain family moved to Stockdale, and there he met his beloved Josephine. A 1941 graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, he was active in Sigma Nu fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, and the Silver Spurs, a UT service organization. After acquiring his degree, he proposed to Josephine, and they were married on Dec. 9, 1941. At the end of World War II, they made their home in Devine.
A banker by profession, Frank followed the footsteps of his father, J.H. Bain, and brothers Travis, Jim Henry Jr., and Bill, holding his first position as a teller at Medina Valley State Bank in Devine. Upon the death of his brother and bank presiden, W.W. “Uncle Bill” Bain, in 1968, he became president of Medina Valley State Bank until his retirement in 1984. He later served as executive vice president and chairman of the board of Security State Bank of Stockdale, a bank also established by their father in 1932. With a banking career spanning nearly 60 years, Frank served the communities of Devine and Stockdale with genuine concern and care for the folks he had the privilege of serving.
Frank’s manner and perspective earned him the respect of others in his profession. In 2003, he received the Texas Bankers Association 50-Year Banker Award, recognizing his long and successful career.
Within the community and county he and Josephine called home, Frank could be found coaching Little League, working with Scouts, filming Warhorse football games, hosting swim parties for numerous groups, and serving in many capacities at First Baptist Church as Sunday school teacher, deacon, and faithful member. Frank also served as mayor of Devine from 1961 through 1965 and in later years on the Medina County Hospital Board.
One of Frank’s greatest pleasures was serving on the board of the South Texas Children’s Home in Beeville. One would find Josephine visiting on the grounds while Frank participated in many South Texas Children’s Home meetings. They both found this time to be one of the greatest blessings in their marriage.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine; a son, John Fordtran Bain; his parents; and his brothers, Travis Whitsett Bain, James Henry Bain Jr., and William Woodrow “Bill” Bain.
He is survived by his sons, Frank Leslie Bain Jr. and wife Lin and William Taylor “Bill” Bain and wife Karen; his daughter, Martha Josephine Bain Wall and husband George; his grandchildren, Frank Leslie “Tres” Bain III and wife Holly, Kevin Wilson Bain and wife Stacey, William David Bain and wife Kendall, Sue Ellen Geyer and husband Leonard, Kari Jan Davis and husband Chris, Johanna Bain Johnson and husband Matt, Kate Josephine Johnson and husband Clay, Laura Bain McGill, and Johnna Bess McGill; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Devine Health and Rehabilitation Center, special friend and caretaker Ofelia Vasquez, and the nurses and Chaplain Todd with Odyssey Hospice for their care and compassion to our parents and our family during these last four years.
The legacy our father most wanted to leave can be expressed in this verse found in Proverbs and which his mother placed the Bible he took to college: “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct thy paths.” Even in his final hour, he recognized God’s guidance throughout all the events of his life.
Visitation was held Sunday, Feb. 5, from 2-9 p.m. in the Hurley Funeral Home in Devine, with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m.
A funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Devine.
Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Devine.
Memorial contributions may be made to the South Texas Children’s Home, P.O. Box 759, Beeville, TX 78104-0759.
