1922-2012

Josephine Bell Fordtran Bain, beloved wife of Frank L. Bain Sr., passed away on Monday night, Jan. 30, 2012. She was born Oct. 3, 1922, in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of William and Josephine Fordtran. A San Antonio native of the Tobin family and a Canary Island descendant, her family moved to Stockdale during the Depression, and it was there that she met the love of her life, Frank. They married just two days after Pearl Harbor, on Dec. 9, 1941, and except for service during the war, made their home in Devine.

In 1955, the Bains built a pool

in their back yard, and Josephine began to teach swimming lessons and American Red Cross Lifesaving classes. Over many summers, she taught the children of Devine “for love, (very little) money, and the American Red Cross.” When her children were in school, junior high and high school band students could be found at the Bains’ home during UIL Solo and Ensemble season, preparing for contest with Mrs. Bain accompanying soloists and holding practice sessions for various instrumental groups.

For many years, Josephine was the pianist for First Baptist Church where she was a member, and in the last years of her life, she played for the Thursday morning Baptist service at the nursing home in Devine.

Josephine was preceded in death by a son, John Fordtran Bain; her parents; and her little brother, William “Little Billie” Fordtran.

She was survived by her husband of 70 years, Frank L. Bain Sr.; her sons, Frank Leslie Bain Jr. and wife Lin and William Taylor “Bill” Bain and wife Karen; her daughter, Martha Josephine Bain Wall and husband George; her sister, Aggie Kendrick; and her brother, Dr. John Fordtran. Josephine is also survived by her grandchildren, Frank Leslie “Tres” Bain III and wife Holly, Kevin Wilson Bain and wife Stacey, William David Bain and wife Kendall, Sue Ellen Geyer and husband Leonard, Kari Jan Davis and husband Chris, Johanna Bain Johnson and husband Matt, Kate Josephine Johnson and husband Clay, Laura Bain McGill, and Johnna Bess McGill; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Devine Health and Rehabilitation Center; special friend and caretaker, Ofelia Vasquez; and the nurses and Chaplain Todd with Odyssey Hospice for their care and compassion to our mother and our family during these last four years.

At a time such as this, Mother would remind us of her lifelong favorite verse from Psalms: “This is the day the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Visitation was held Sunday, Feb. 5, from 2-9 p.m. in the Hurley Funeral Home in Devine, with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m.

A funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Devine.

Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Devine.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Texas Children’s Home, P.O. Box 759, Beeville, TX 78104-0759.
