At the beginning of this school year, the La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) Child Nutrition Department became the first department in the district to use School Messenger software. The School Messenger has the capability to reach every household with pertinent information in a matter of minutes.

At this time, the department uses School Messenger to update parents or guardians on student meal accounts. The staff sends these notices out three times a week; there has been a significant decrease in the amount of charges accrued on student meal accounts across the district.

This tool has decreased time spent making phone calls. The Child Nutrition Department understands parents work and that they need this information delivered to them in a convenient way. This system has allowed messages to be sent in the evening, when more families are home. La Vernia ISD encourages parents to keep contact information current. This helps the system connect with the families faster.

Allen Bordelon, director of technology, and the entire Technology Department have been involved in the implementation of this system of communication. There are many promising uses for School Messenger in the future and for many facets of the district’s operations!
