The definition of community, according to Webster, is a group of people living in the same area and under the same government; a class or group having common interests and likes. What is the common interest of the people associated with La Vernia Primary School? Of course, the answer is the education of our children.

As in any relationship, the building of community takes concerted efforts on the part of everyone in the group. At La Vernia Primary, activities are held that enable relationship-building and education of our children to happen simultaneously. Ideas are shared through various groups, such as our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), Site-Based Planning Committee, the primary faculty, and our students.

During this year’s football season, on the night of Homecoming, our PTO hosted a “tailgate party.” With more than 100 in attendance, the event was a success. Parents, teachers, and children were visiting, playing, and eating! What a blessing to be surrounded by others who are part of the community of La Vernia Primary.

Other events that are important to our school are monthly parent coffees with administrators, PTO meetings, Family Literacy Night, and Family Math Night. Upcoming events at the primary school include:

•Thursday, Feb. 9 -- Local author, “Aunt Judy,” will visit our campus and host a reading event

•Wednesday, Feb. 15 -- The monthly parent coffee at 7:30 a.m. -- all parents are welcome

•Thursday, Feb. 16 -- “Dinosaur Rocks” presentation for students in kindergarten through second grade

•Saturday, Feb. 18 -- Elementary UIL Meet in La Vernia -- 15 second-grade students will participate in storytelling, creative writing, and chess

•Tuesday, Feb. 28 -- annual wax museum. Visit to see some famous people re-enacted by the school’s second-graders.

All of these opportunities give parents, teachers, and students a chance to build relationships as part of the school community in La Vernia.
